Alberta Advantage Immigration Program

The province administers the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP), formerly known as the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program. This program provides an opportunity for aspiring immigrants possessing the specific skills and work experience required by the province to obtain an Alberta Provincial Nomination Certificate.

If you are considering immigrating to Alberta, there are currently eight available options for you to explore. This resource will assist you in determining the most following suitable immigration stream that aligns with your specific circumstances.

Alberta offers various immigration streams to cater to different situations:

Streams for workers

  • Alberta Opportunity Stream:

Is designed for skilled workers who are presently employed in an eligible occupation within Alberta.

  • Alberta General Express Entry Stream:

Targets candidates within the Express Entry (EE) system with a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of at least 300, and who are currently working in an eligible occupation.

  • Alberta Accelerated Tech Pathway:

A part of the Express Entry stream welcomes applicants working in Alberta’s technology industry or those who have received a job offer in one of the 38 occupations identified by the province.

  • Rural Renewal Stream:

Is tailored for candidates who have received a job offer from an Alberta employer to work in a rural community within the province.

Streams for entrepreneurs

    • Farm Stream

Those who wish to operate a farming business in Alberta.

    • Graduate Entrepreneur Stream

International graduates of a designated post-secondary institution in Alberta, who wish to start a business in Alberta.

    • Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream

Foreign nationals who graduated from outside Canada and who wish to start a business in Alberta.

    • Rural Entrepreneur Stream

Entrepreneurs who want to acquire a business or start one in a rural Alberta community.

    Alberta Opportunity Stream:

Foreign nationals currently employed in Alberta and international graduates who have completed their studies at an approved post-secondary institution in Alberta are eligible to apply for a provincial nomination through the Alberta Opportunity Stream.

    Application Fee: CAD $500

    How it Works:

To apply for the Alberta Opportunity Stream, candidates must complete the online application via the AAIP online portal. Upon submission, candidates will be prompted to provide specific documents based on their individual circumstances and pay the application fee online.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Possession of a valid work permit.
    • Employment in an eligible occupation in Alberta that aligns with your work experience.
    • Attainment of a minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 4 or 5, depending on the occupation.
    • Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent.
    • Accumulation of at least 12 months of work experience in Alberta within the last 18 months, or a minimum of 24 months of work experience in Canada within the last 30 months.

    Alberta Express Entry Stream:

The Alberta Express Entry Stream enables Alberta to nominate individuals who have an existing profile in the federal Express Entry system. Candidates who demonstrate a connection to Alberta and possess the necessary skills to contribute to the province’s economic growth may be invited by Alberta to submit an application.

Applicants who receive a provincial nomination from Alberta through the Express Entry Stream are awarded an additional 600 Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points. This substantially increases their chances of receiving an invitation to apply for permanent residence in the subsequent Express Entry draw.

    Application Fee: CAD $500

    How it Works:

The Alberta Express Entry Stream operates on an invitation-only basis. Candidates with Express Entry profiles may receive a Notification of Interest (NOI) directly from the Alberta government within the federal system. Once invited, candidates have a limited timeframe to indicate their interest in being considered for selection under this stream.

If selected, candidates will receive a request from the AAIP to apply for a provincial nomination. This involves submitting all the required documents through the AAIP online portal.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Must be in the Express Entry pool.
    • Must have expressed a genuine interest in permanently immigrating to Alberta.
    • Must be employed in an occupation that supports Alberta’s economic development and diversification.
    • Attainment of a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 300.

To be considered for the Alberta Express Entry Stream, it is crucial to actively monitor your Express Entry profile, respond promptly to Notifications of Interest (NOIs), and ensure that all required documentation is prepared and submitted accurately through the designated AAIP online portal.

    Alberta Accelerated Tech Pathway:

The Alberta Accelerated Tech Pathway is a specialized immigration program designed to expedite the process for tech professionals who already have a profile in the federal government’s Express Entry system and are eligible for the Alberta Express Entry Stream. Eligible individuals who believe they meet the criteria for this pathway are invited to submit an online form through the AAIP portal to undergo assessment under this stream. The AAIP carefully verifies that the candidate meets the minimum eligibility requirements. If the requirements are met, the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) extends an invitation to the candidate to apply for a provincial nomination.

    Application Fee: CAD $500

    How it Works:

Candidates can initiate the application process for the accelerated pathway if they are currently employed or have received a job offer from an Alberta technology industry employer in an eligible tech occupation, and they fulfill the requirements of the Alberta Express Entry stream. To get started, candidates must submit an online form through the AAIP website. If the candidate meets the specific criteria of the stream, they will receive an invitation from the AAIP to apply for a provincial nomination. This involves submitting all the necessary documents through the AAIP online portal.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Must have a profile in the Express Entry pool.
    • Must have expressed a genuine interest in permanently immigrating to Alberta.
    • Attainment of a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 300.
    • Must be currently employed or have received a job offer in an eligible tech occupation in Alberta.

If you believe you meet the requirements of the Alberta Accelerated Tech Pathway, it is important to complete the online form on the AAIP portal, ensuring that all the information provided is accurate and supported by the required documents. The program aims to facilitate the immigration process for tech professionals and attract skilled individuals to contribute to Alberta’s thriving technology industry.

The Rural Renewal Stream is specifically designed for candidates who have received a job offer from an Alberta employer to work in rural communities within the province.

    Application Fee: CAD $500

    How it Works:

This stream operates on a community-driven approach, which means that candidates must first secure the support of a participating community in Alberta. Designated communities actively seek to attract and retain foreign nationals, while employers extend job offers to eligible candidates. The community takes responsibility for ensuring that the candidate meets the specific stream criteria. Once the candidate receives a letter of support from the community, they can proceed to submit their application to the AAIP.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Must possess a valid full-time job offer or employment contract from an Alberta employer to work in an eligible occupation within a designated community.

    • Must have at least a high school education equivalent to the Canadian education standard.
    • Must demonstrate adequate funds to support themselves and all family members intending to relocate to the designated community.

If you have received a job offer from an Alberta employer to work in a rural community and meet the specified requirements, it is crucial to obtain the endorsement and support of the designated community. Once you have received the necessary endorsement, you can proceed with your application to the AAIP. The Rural Renewal Stream offers opportunities for individuals to contribute to the growth and development of Alberta’s rural areas while pursuing their career aspirations.
